Kerry Chavers to compete in The Blox web series

Kerry Chavers, a local artist and business owner, will compete against dozens of entrepreneurs from across the US this spring.

Chavers was selected as a contestant on The Blox web television series for her decade-long business, The Chickasha Art Center.

Blox is a reality web TV show downloader for entrepreneurs, small business owners and startups. Including Chavers, 60 contestants were selected from nearly 10,000 applicants to participate in challenges and pitch their ideas to a panel of judges.

The show will be filmed in March at the Osage Casino and Resort in Tulsa and will air in May. Chavers said she’s lucky the show will be filmed in Oklahoma instead of Missouri this year because contestants are responsible for their own travel expenses.

He said the opportunity will help him learn to be a more savvy business owner and make decisions for the Chickasha Center for the Arts moving forward. He looks forward to connecting with other entrepreneurs and coming back stronger from the experience.

“I feel like I’ve already won,” Chavers said. “I feel that I represent my family and my hometown. I’m going to do everything I can.”

From filming for Blox to now, Chavers has been practicing her public speaking skills to the level of a champion. She has spoken before Chickasha Rotary and is the guest speaker at the Successful Women in Business Series luncheon on March 6. He also worked with Kathy Davis at the University of Science and Arts Oklahoma to combat any remaining stage fright. Other than that, Chavers is no stranger to public speaking, having been an art teacher for 32 years, 22 of those at Chickasha High School.

At the Chickasha Art Center, Chavers led several canvas painting workshops, a children’s art camp, and offered portraits of people and pets. During the pandemic, Chavers adapted his business to offer homemade kits.

Chavers’ murals stretch across the Chickasha canvas. He painted portraits of pop stars on the walls of Legends Pub House & Venue. She brought fairy tale characters to life in the Chickasha Public Library’s children’s area. His work can be seen at the Chickasha Police Department, A&E Grill, Grady County Board of Elections and many window murals over the years. In addition, he and a group of artists painted the Christmas hay bales along Grand Avenue in one of the most iconic works. Most recently he worked with Chet Heath on the old Savoy Hotel, painting the monkey wall in The Jungle Ice Fun Zone. and a pizza menu mural at The Flower Shop Winery and Pizzeria.

Chavers said he would like to thank the business owners and leaders who contributed to his success, as well as the team of young artists and college students who contributed their talents.

“They bring such new life to my business,” he said.

Chavers said he is also grateful for the support of his family. He often taught classes and workshops with his son, Sean Brown, who is now an art teacher at Norman.

Chavers said that when she opened the Chickasha Art Center in October 2014, many of the jobs flowed naturally from her experience as a teacher.

“The business part I’m just learning on the fly all the time,” Chavers said.
