The first major awards night of the year has arrived. Tonight, the Golden Globes will hand out awards for excellence in film and television in 2023. The star-studded event will see the likes of box office juggernaut Barbenheimer take on critical favorites like Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things as well. Barbenheimer dominates film nominations at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards

The Globes could take the safe route and award awards to both halves of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, given the different categories for drama, comedy or music. But they’ve been known to be meandering in the past, so it wouldn’t be a shock if they destroyed the German language The Zone of Interest and the satirical American novel. Anything is possible, and the awards ceremony will shape the awards discourse over the next two months.

Should have been nominated: Ferrari – Michael Mann’s underrated autobiography is a compelling study of a man driven to win at all costs.

Should win: Barbie – Margot Robbie’s company LuckyChap Entertainment has been nurturing female-led projects over the past few years and deserves credit for achieving mainstream success on a billion-dollar scale.

Should have been nominated: Saltburn – Emerald Fennell’s delicious class satire doesn’t always work, but it’s the sign of a unique filmmaker.

will win: Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) – Cillian, always the bridesmaid in his many collaborations with Christopher Nolan, finally gets the chance to be the bride, and he shines as the fragile and ambitious J. Robert Oppenheimer.

Should win: Bradley Cooper (Maestro) – Playing Bernstein sometimes makes an impression, but it’s a wonderful work that inhabits the double layers of a man who has always performed, even in his personal life.

will win: Lily Gladstone – She’s great as the strong-willed Molly Burkhart at the center of Killers of the Flower Moon, but this is a case of category fraud; She should have been in the support category.

Should win: It’s a trio of fantastic performances between Carey Mulligan (The Maestro), Sandra Holler (Anatomy of a Fall), and Greta Lee (Past Lives), each of whom deserves the top prize.

Should win: Margot Robbie (Barbie) – It’s unfortunate that there’s another role that brings life to an inanimate woman this year, but Margot takes us on Barbie’s journey from plastic to human.

will win: Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) – Cord Jefferson’s satire on race opened late in December, but received critical acclaim, especially for Jeffrey’s role as a frustrated writer.

Should win: Charles Melton (May/December) – It’s not easy acting opposite two Academy Award winners, but Charles tenderly embodies the man and child at the heart of the story.

Should win: Rosamund Pike (Saltbourne) – Rosamund’s performance as the lady of the manor moves seamlessly between oblivious comedy and sad heartbreak.
