berlin I love you Review

Lovely addition to the experimental film series that began with “Paris, Je time”, this movie is similarly a set of shorts, each from a different director. Unlike “Paris, Je time”, where each short is distinct, “Berlin, I Love You” intermixes the scenes from various shorts into more of a movie format. I didn’t much care for the second entry in the series, namely “New York, I Love You”, but seeing this film makes me want to go back and view “Paris je time” again. I think “Berlin, I Love You” is my favorite in the series and I will undoubtedly want to watch it again. The character with the angel wings is a clear reference to the 1987 classic film “Wings of Desire” where invisible angels descend on Berlin and comfort its distressed human inhabitants. German actor Robert Stadlober does a great job with the part.

Part of Emmanuel’s Cities of Love Series ie Love you Paris/love you, New York. Berlin is the latest American German Production ensembles 10 short films in 2 hours, a large international cast & 10 directors. Got as a gift from reading Herzog, Veronica Ferres & reviewing their 15 films. It is a brilliant film as good as I Love u, New York. Many people come to Berlin to live, die, find love, home, Car, wings or dream. Their short flashes of life make a great moving motion picture. Chance to loose/find life is always 50/50. Father meets his loving daughter. Fellow gives free lunch to a couple. Kiss is the best birthday gift. Children are open loving & honest beings. Many women eat little to accommodate the strange habits of men. Woman Taxi Driver finds her childhood friend. They soon find their home angel & mission/purpose. I love seeing Helen Mirren in a mature role.

I don’t understand the negative reviews at all. These are vignettes so there’s no time to fully flesh out the characters but the performances are excellent. Scenes with Helen Mirrin and Kiera Knightly are wonderful. Mickey Rourke is brilliant as the loser absent father who encounters a young woman who bears resemblance to his daughter — very tricky scene but they pull it off. Yes, the whole thing is a little lightweight and a little syrupy at times but the filming is beautiful and the writing is solid. It’s set in Berlin but it’s not really about Berlin, it’s about love in its many forms.
