Kiran Rao’s rapata ladies‘ was a slow start at the box office on Friday, but gained momentum on its second day of release. The film earned Rs 1.60 crore on Saturday, taking the total domestic collection to Rs 2.35 billion, according to industry tracker Saknilk. On the first day of release, Laapataa Ladies earned only Rs 75 million.

The film recorded an overall occupancy of 18.99% on Saturday. ‘Raapata Ladies’ will see Kiran Rao return to the director’s chair after 13 years. Her last directorial work was her 2011 film Dhobi Ghat, which was also her debut film.

The film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastava in the lead roles, and also stars Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, Durgesh Kumar, Satendra Soni and Hemant Soni. Laapataa Ladies is bankrolled by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao and Jyoti Deshpande.

The story of the film revolves around a newlywed man who loses his wife on a crowded train after mistaking her for another bride. The mix-up is discovered only after they arrive in the village, and the journey to find the man’s real wife begins.

Despite lagging at the box office, Laapata Ladies has received positive reviews. Shubhra Gupta of Indianexpress.com gave the film 3.5 stars “If you want to learn about patriarchy, come here. 101, see how the women of the house learned how to get around it.
