Deepika Padukone stopped by Jawaharlal Nehru University, which has been embroiled in chaos and protests for the past three days, in order to show her solidarity with the students who were subjected to violence late on Sunday.
The actress’s visit came at a time when most of Bollywood’s A-listers have chosen to stay silent on the rising anger and protests across the country, opposing the CAA, NRC, and acts of violence on university campuses.
The 34-year-old star, who was in the National Capital for promotions of her upcoming film ‘Chhapaak’ – that tells the tale of an acid attack survivor, attended the meeting and stood as former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar gave a speech.
Several hashtags, both positive and negative, like #DeepikaPadukone, #IStandWithDeepika, #BoycottDeepikaPadukone, and #BoycottChhapaak started trending on Twitter, following her visit.
Bollywood celebrities like Anurag Kashyap, Konkona Sen Sharma were among those who tweeted in support of the actress
While Bollywood stars Deepika did win praises, #BoycottDeepikaPadukone and #BoycottChhapaak have been top trends on Twitter for the past few hours. Even if Deepika had her film’s interests at heart, does she not deserve a round for applause for taking a risk by willingly subjecting herself to virtual hatred and incessant trolling?
