Episode 3 of The Great Indian Kapil Show sees the arrival of Sunil Grover who adds to the vitality and overshadows the humor of Kapil Sharma. Despite the improvements, the show lacks the fearless irreverence it needs.
Admittedly, Netflix’s high-profile episode 3 was an improvement on episode 1, where the Kapoor family was paid a small fortune to get away with the show’s jokes.
In its third episode, The Great(?) Indian Kapil Show did what it does best: insult people, irrespective of their cat, creed, culture or nationality. In this sense, the show is truly democratic.
I’m not sure if the leading couple was killed and the director Imtiaz Ali They paid to appreciate Kapil’s humor because Chamkila is a Netflix movie. Who pays for Ghar Ka Khana?
What I noticed is that Diljit Dosanjh Abhishek Krushna was not amused by the trump card. His Donald Trump impersonation was grotesque; And that was good. When you portray someone so incorrigible, you can’t soften the blow.
Kiku Sharda’s performance as a Korean politician was no less amusing. Making fun of accents and cultures is the lowest form of humor. Could we have fewer jokes about body shaming and bodybuilding?
The show was in the middle when Sunil Grover arrived. His “Duffle” drag act is nothing but drag. Grover elevates the show with every arrival. Even in the third episode, there was vigilance under that shimmering chamkila saree. Soon Grover had the entire congregation singing and dancing on stage.
For me, this episode was pivotal: it proved that Kapil can’t carry the show alone. The show needs Sunil Grover’s decorative humor to push it across the finish line.
All said and done, Episode 3 still didn’t have enough chutzpah to call it an all-around success. The quality that separates Kapil from the rest of the comedians in our country is funk. Let’s have more fearless, irreverent Kapils and less star-struck publicity machines.
