I love the story

On World Radio Day, Sara Ali Khan announces the release date of her film ‘Ae Watan Mere Watan’ on Amazon Prime Video.

There is a saying that says love has no language. There is another saying that says – love knows no boundaries. And both adages have made their way across the Hindi film landscape, spawning all manner of love stories, from charming to cliched to cacophonous, just the way love should be. And Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment made a series called i love story Created by Somen Mishra. Writers involved in this creation include Mirat Trivedi, Hardik Mehta, Aarsh Vora, Vivek Soni, Rahul Badvelkar, Shazia Iqbal, Akshay Indikar, Tejashree Akshay, Arya Rothe, Archana Phadke, Soumyajit Ghosh Dastidari and Colin D’Cuna.

Love in captivity and landscapes

The series traces the real-life journey of six couples, how they met, the conflicts they faced and all the nuances of their passions and sorrows through recorded interviews, anecdotes and real footage. The first story takes place in a closed office space where two people fall in love with each other through messages and mail. “Block him,” is one of the first responses of a woman who eventually becomes a man’s wife. The second story begins with sweeping shots of the mountains and is a saga that unfolds in the landscapes of our country. And then we see Kolkata, which is full of busyness and beauty. There’s a sense of chaos and glamour, a city of joy oozes, and in that city there’s a couple celebrating 46 years of love and madness. Before we learn about the people whose love stories we witness, we witness the world they inhabit and occupy and how that played a role in bringing them together. For example, people living in the mountains must be prepared for clouds to invade their homes, and Kolkata is described as a city that does not question anyone’s acting or beliefs.

Love and war and tragedy

But the fourth and fifth stories are the most important and interesting. In the fourth story, a man is accused of sedition and his only hope is his wife. There are uncomfortable conversations and dangerous consequences as Mrs. Subhadra Khaperde belongs to a Dalit village family. And the fifth brings us to the horrors of Afghanistan, where war conquers and love survives and conquers. The couple in this story are trying to remember what is nothing but a memory, and the one word they utter is “helplessness.”

The series does a convincing job of bringing together the various aspects and conflicts of love and affection and bringing them together in one series about passion. But don’t be fooled by the title of the series, it’s as awe-inspiring about love as it is frothy. Oh, and Happy Valentine’s Day too!
