Good scary movies on Netflix

[ad_1]

A collage featuring some of Netflix's scariest horror movies (clockwise from top left):

Sometimes you have to give people what they want, and what they want is to be afraid. They don’t want to think about it. They don’t want to be challenged. They don’t have to deal with “themes” and “symbolism” and all that film school BS that makes horror movies “highbrow.” Sometimes you want an ice cream sandwich more than a Michelin-starred meal. It’s nice to enjoy the simple taste. Life is hard enough, but sometimes it’s nice to do something easy. These are definitely the funniest scary movies that Netflix has to offer.

Vampire vs. Bronx

(Netflix)

Osmany Rodriguez’s Vampire vs. Bronx is exactly what it says on the tin. Vampires have invaded the Bronx. It’s up to a group of young kids to rally the community and defend their home. The film is a clever allegory of gentrification, where wealthy vampires buy up neighborhood homes and businesses and move in to better control their residents. The vamps soon learn painfully that this was a bad idea. They wanted a stake in the neighborhood, and the neighborhood gave them a stake in the heart.

Stranger

Three masked assailants "Stranger"
(Universal Pictures)

brian bertino’s Stranger is a classic home invasion genre movie. A young couple (Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) staying in a secluded vacation home soon find themselves threatened by three masked assailants who knock on the door. I’ll never know why they opened the door to three people wearing creepy masks. Some people are too stupid to live. Even more horrifying than the break-in was the chilling answer given to a couple who begged to know why the killer came to their home: “Because you were home.”

creep up

A boy named Aaron responds to an Internet ad from a stranger named Joseph (Mark Duplass), who asks Aaron to spend the day filming him. Naturally, things take a murderous turn. What did Aaron expect? They were going to shoot an influencer-style “day in the life” video? Aaron should have been well aware that Joseph had something pornographic in mind. Unfortunately for Aaron, Joseph’s plan was far worse.
