AMES (ISU) – Winemakers can improve their chemistry skills through a series of virtual workshops offered by experts at the Iowa State University Extension and Cooperative.

Four workshops will be presented live on Webex from April 3rd to May 1st. Each workshop includes a presentation, hands-on demonstration of laboratory techniques, hands-on practice, guided calculations, and group discussion.

Each webinar will run from 10 am to 11:30 am. Participants can register for as many webinars as they want and must register by March 20th to help with planning.

Dates and topics:

• April 3, soluble solids and pH.

• April 17, titrated acidity.

• April 24, Vinmetrica’s Sulfur Dioxide (SO2).

• May 1, sulfur dioxide (SO2) by aeration-oxidation.

The lively, interactive format will allow participants to experiment and try new things during each webinar, says Od Vatrello, assistant professor and specialist in oenology (enology) at Iowa State University.

Waterlot said participants must have basic equipment to complete the tasks involved. Some supplies will be shipped to participants in advance.

The goal of the workshops is to provide knowledge and tools that can be applied to wineries in Iowa and beyond.

Presenters will be Vatrelot, in addition to Alex Gapinski, a wine scientist with a master’s degree in food science and technology from Iowa State University.
