‘The Sort of’ to end with third and final season on CBC

[ad_1]

The upcoming third and final season of CBC and Max’s original comedy The Sort of will be the final season, co-creators Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo have announced.

The eight-episode final season will premiere in Canada on the CBC Gem streaming service on November 17th, with two episodes released each week until the series finale on December 8th.

“We tried to tell a story about a certain change in Sabi’s life and how the people around them change. And in this next season, we wanted to make sure that story felt right to us. We feel it ended in a very special way,” Baig and Filippo said in a statement.

“Sort Of” stars Baig’s Sabi Mehboob as a gender-expansive millennial who is tired of changing who he is for the comfort of others. The third and final season follows Sabi’s journey as she comes to terms with her feelings of both sadness and freedom after her father’s death. Sabi is forced to face big questions about their identity and grapple with big life choices, without the constraints of living up to her father’s expectations.

The pair went on to dispel rumors suggesting the show had been canceled, saying, “Series like ours, shows with queer and trans characters, tend to get canceled early on. I know it is, and I know it’s been happening a lot lately. I want to say that’s not what’s happening here. We’re going to make this third season our last. I made this with this in mind.”

Additional cast members include Gray Powell, Amanda Cordner, Elora Patnaik, Sapinder Leahy, Kaya Kinjo, Aiden Bedard, Raymond Cham Jr., Becca Blackwell, Ali Hassan, Kareem Voud, They include Varun Saranga, Asha Mansur Gonsalves, and Grace Lin Kung. Alok Vaid-Menon and Angelica Ross will also appear in cameos in the final season.

“At a time when the trans community continues to be targeted and trans rights are under constant attack, we know this show is coming to an end,” Baig and Filippo’s statement continued. “Our hope is that this series will continue to be life-affirming and spark conversations long after its final season concludes. Despite all the transphobia in our world, ‘Sort Of’ will always exist. I will continue to do so.”

The dramatic comedy won seven awards at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Comedy Series. It also won a Peabody Award in the entertainment category and earned its second Peabody Award nomination at the upcoming ceremony.

“Sort Of” is produced with the participation of the Canadian Media Foundation. Baig and Filippo will serve as showrunners and executive producers alongside Jennifer Khawaja and Bruno Dubé. Andrea Glinski, Laura Perlmutter, Ian Iqbal Rashid and Tricia Fish will serve as co-executive producers. The final season will be directed by Filippo and Shamim Salih. Sphere Media will be in charge of production and distribution.
