Citizen Academy gives civilians inside a glimpse of law enforcement – WSOC TV

IDELE COUNTY, N.C. — The Idel County Citizens Academy introduces civilians to how law enforcement protects public safety.

Sheriff Darren Campbell and his deputies shared techniques with about 30 participants Thursday.

“They want to know that we have the ability to keep them safe if they need it in their darkest hours. That’s one thing we want to demonstrate,” Campbell said.

They demonstrated how to use drones to search for missing people, and the sheriff’s emergency response team had a chance to show off skills like “waterside takedowns” on the lake.

“For example, if a child goes missing or is the victim of a crime, they will understand what our capabilities are,” Campbell said. “They also understand why we do things like that.”

Scott Kazos, a former U.S. Navy sailor, joined the program after moving to Troutman two years ago because he wanted to learn more about local law enforcement.

“You never stop learning,” Kazos said. “Whatever you do, you can keep doing it over and over again.”

The Union County Citizens Academy is open to people 18 years of age and older.
