Prince Jukebox musical from Ryan Coogler, Universal

Ryan Coogler is in a purple state of mind, as the director works on a feature-length concert film centered on Prince.

Coogler is attached to produce an untitled jukebox of Prince songs for Universal Pictures. Hollywood Reporter He confirmed it. The project, which has been in development since 2018, hails from Proximity Media and has a script by Bryan Edward Hill.

Producers include Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, Seif Ohanian and Universal Music Publishing Group President Jody Gerson. Proximity’s Rebecca Chu is executive producer.

THR It was reported earlier this week that Coogler’s upcoming untitled film from Warner Bros. Which stars Michael B. Jordan is scheduled for release on March 7, 2025, with the studio acquiring the coveted project in February after a bidding war. The pair have a long professional history together, with Coogler previously mentoring Jordan Fruitvale station (2013), Doctrine (2015) and Black Panther (2018).

Most recently, Coogler directed the 2022 Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He is credited with working on the lyrics to Rihanna’s song “Lift Me Up” from the film’s soundtrack, and the song earned him Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Grammy Award nominations.

Prince is a music icon known for a host of hit songs, including “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Kiss,” and “Batdance,” all of which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His film credits include He starred in Albert Magnoli’s 1984 rock musical Purple rain, with the arrival of the Warner Bros. film The classic — which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score — celebrates its 40th anniversary this July.
