Women in Music 2024 panel

The 2024 Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theater at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles. Jimmy Kimmel returns as host for the fourth time, and is joined on stage by an all-star roster of hosts.

Kimmel previously said he returned to host the show in part because he had a feeling a popular film might be nominated, arguing that it was easier to joke about something the audience had seen.

“I’m sitting in the movie theater watching Barbie And I think: Well, maybe I’ll do this again, because at least I have a point of reference with everyone.

He said he felt it too Top Gun: Maverickwhich received six Academy Award nominations, including a nod for Best Picture, at the 2023 Academy Awards: “I knew there was a movie that people had seen, and that makes the job easier.”

Oscars executive producer Molly McInerney echoed that appreciation for the nominated films that also did well at the box office when she and Kimmel spoke with Hollywood Reporter.

“It was a huge relief for us as joke writers to have nominated films seen by home audiences, such as Barbie And OppenheimerShe said.

As for the process of agreeing to host again, Kimmel said: “I think Molly is waiting until I say yes and then she tries to talk me out of it. If it is still yes, it becomes ‘Yes!“”

McInerney also argued that the dual actor-writer strikes of 2023 contributed to the decision to accept the gig.

“I think the strike played a role too,” she said. “It’s been giving people jobs and also having a room full of people who value their jobs more than ever, and making movies again has been a good wave to ride.”
