Netflix shows and movies filmed at Wilton House near Salisbury

Wilton House was the country residence of the Earls of Pembroke for over 400 years.

The house and gardens have been open to the public since 1951, and the property is often described as the most beautiful country house in England.

She first appeared on the big screen in 1971 in The Music Lover, then on our television screens 12 years later in an episode of Blackadder.

Over the decades, the house has appeared in numerous shows and movies — here are some of the highlights.

1) Bridgerton series on Netflix (2020, 2022)

Netflix’s most-watched series of all time, the historical drama “Bridgerton,” based on the novel The Duke and I by Julia Quinn, had multiple scenes filmed at Wilton House.

One of the most famous scenes, which takes place at the royal palace also known as Wilton House, sees the entire town gathering to watch the new ladies of high society make their debut before Queen Charlotte.

Stars who have gained a huge following from this show include Regé-Jean Page who plays the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset and Snatch actress Phoebe Dynevor who plays Daphne Bridgerton.

2) Emma (2019)

The comedy-drama Emma, ​​based on Jane Austen’s novel, was remade last year starring Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy.

Wilton House was used for Donwell Abbey, the home of Mr. Knightley’s (Johnny Flynn) love interest.

3) The Crown series on Netflix (2016-2022)

Salisbury has appeared in several seasons of Netflix’s The Crown, starring popular actors Jared Harris, Olivia Colman, Matt Smith, Claire Foy, Gillian Anderson, and Helena Bonham Carter.

Wilton House served as the predominant filming location for interior shots of Buckingham Palace and appears in most seasons of the programme.

4) Johnny English Reborn (2011)

A sequel to the spy comedy Johnny English, Johnny English Reborn, starring Rowan Atkinson and Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike, one of the famous ending scenes was filmed at Wilton House.

In typical Johnny English fashion, when he tracks down his killer – an elderly Chinese woman disguised as the Queen – he mistakes her for the real Queen, puts her in a headlock and hits her with a silver platter.

5) Tomb Raider (2018)

Inspired by the popular video game, the Tomb Raider adaptation stars Alicia Vikander as heroine Lara Croft, replacing Angelina Jolie, filming the Croft Manor scenes at Wilton House.

The Wire’s Dominic West plays her father, Lord Richard Croft, and the Hateful Eight’s Walton Goggins plays antagonist Matthias Vogel.

6) Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Salisbury also appeared in the Hollywood adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” another classic Jane Austen novel, with “Love Actually” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” actress Keira Knightley in the role of heroine Elizabeth Bennet.

Wilton House plays the pivotal role of Pemberley, Mr. Darcy’s (Matthew Macfadyen) beautiful Derby estate that finally sways Elizabeth Bennet’s affections in his favor.

7) Sense and Sensibility (1995)

The historical drama Sense and Sensibility was also filmed at the country house.

The 1995 film stars Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, the late Alan Rickman, and Emma Thompson.

The film follows sisters Marianne and Elinor Dashwood who move to a cabin in the Southwest after their father dies and their finances crumble, both striving to find love and facing heartbreak along the way.

The Wilton house features a “London Ball” where Elinor and John Willoughby (Greg Wise) have an awkward confrontation.

8) Outlander (2016)

Based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon, the series follows Claire (Caitriona Balfe), a former World War II army nurse in Scotland, who finds herself transported back in time to the year 1743.

The series premiered in 2014, and the second part of the seventh series is expected to be available in 2024.

Wilton House appeared in the second series of the program and used the Palace of Versailles.
