Based on the book by Anurag Pathak, 12th Fail chronicles the life of Manoj Kumar Sharma, who overcame extreme poverty to become an IPS officer. The film spotlights his journey and how his wife Shraddha Joshi, an IRS officer, contributed to his rise.

The film stars Vikrant Massey as Manoj and Medha Shankar as Shraddha. During a special event to celebrate the film’s success, Vidhu Vinod Chopra spoke to Vikrant and asked him how he was looking back on the film 100 days later.

“100 days ago, on this very screen, we performed our first ever show. When we talk about numbers, we have Rs 100, now we have Rs 500, Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000, but for me it boils down to one thing. What are your intentions? Why are you making that movie? If you make an honest movie, you can reach that number. Later, Anupama Chopra, who was present at the event, was also asked for her opinion. “I’ve contributed very little here, but (the success) is due to all the people here. 12th Fail has emerged as a surprise hit of 2023, grossing Rs 67 rupees worldwide. This is a staggering number in an era where powerful action actors dominate the big screen. The film received widespread critical praise, especially for Vikrant Massey’s performance.

The film was also praised for its direction and screenplay by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, with many pointing out that the veteran filmmaker has returned to form with his latest film. This is his second film in three years, the first being Shikhara, a 2020 romantic drama about the 1990 Kashmiri Pandit exodus.

12th Fail is co-written by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Jaskunwar Kohli. Anurag Pathak and Ayush Saxena were credited as associate writers.
