Manipuri film ‘Son of Joseph’ to be screened for Indian premiere at 29th Kolkata International Film Festival

The film tells the story of a teenager who returns to his hometown in Manipur amidst ethnic conflict and rebellion.

The Manipuri film ‘Joseph’s Son’, directed by renowned filmmaker Haoban Paban, will be screened as its Indian premiere at the 29th Kolkata International Film Festival 2023, to be held from December 5 to 12, 2023.
The film will compete with 11 other Indian language films at the event.
Son of Joseph will also be screened at the 28th Kerala International Film Festival 2023, which will be held in Thiruvananthapuram from December 8 to 15.

The film depicts the story of a teenager who returns to his hometown in Manipur during ethnic conflict and rebellion.
Father Joseph embarks on a mission to find his son, who is passionate about soccer. As Joseph travels, his fear deepens. It is a fear of eternal uncertainty, both past and present, which is compounded by a personal emptiness when the police ask him to identify an unidentified body in the morgue. It’s a journey no parent ever wants to take.

The film, which is based on the short story ‘Joseph Ki Macha’ written by Sahitya Akademi awardee Sudhir Naroibam, stars the famous folk singer Reuben Mashanva. The script was written by Sudhir and Pavan.

Pavan’s other film ‘The Iron Lady of Manipur’ and fellow Manipuri filmmaker Lakshmi Priya Devi’s ‘The Gift’ will also be released on November 11 alongside the 54th Indian International Film Festival 2023 to be held in Goa. It was selected for the 17th Film Bazaar, which will be held for five days starting from the 20th of May.

The other 11 films in the competition are Sanjeev Sivan’s Ozki Ozki Ozki, Shonette Anthony Barrett’s Avni Ki Kismat, Uttam Kamati’s Kehwal and Samyukta Vijayan’s Blue Sunshine , Manoj Shinde’s Valli, K. Yashoda Prakash’s Qandeel’s ‘Light of Hope’, Rajini Basumatary’s ‘Gorai Pakri’ (Wild Swan), Arup Manna’s ‘Samarpan’ (Surrender) ), “Hemantel Aparanya” (Autumn Afternoon) by Ashok Viswanathan, “Omkara” (Ascension) by Unni KR, and “The Boy Who Dreamed of Electricity” by Jigar Madanlal Nagda.
