Karan Johar: People don’t see my films for what they are, I get truckloads of opinions about me | Hindi Film News

From his love for intervals to punctuate a story to how the portrayal of gender politics in films has evolved, Karan spoke on a range of topics at a recent film festival in Chandigarh.

“There’s something exotic about that interval.”Karan reveals that he loves the concept of intervals in Indian films. “I understand how frustrating it is for writers and directors who don’t want to break the story, but we have to sell the popcorn. We have to put all the story in the first half and create the magic in the second half.” Yes, it’s not easy. I love the interlude, there’s something exotic about breaking the story and leaving[the audience]on an emotional high or on a cliffhanger.”
Explaining why his father, director Yash Johar, used to say, ‘Interval ke bada buffer sheen rakho’, Karan said: The character is Kuch Kuch Ka Rahe Hain. We’ve all written buffer scenes. ”

“The Rocky Owl Rani thing was easy for me because those are my personal lines.”Karan’s last film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ talked about how our upbringing and environment influences us and how we should learn and change instead of jumping in and canceling. , suggests they should be given room to evolve. Karan says: “Rocky Aur Rani was a no-brainer for me because they are my personal principles and have evolved over the years. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has many flaws. I think there was a certain gender politics, but I didn’t know any better than that at the time.”
Sharing how he realized that men who pursue women romantically were stalking them, Karan said, “That’s what I thought until Zoya Akhtar fired me one day. I told her that I love movies, mostly about stalking. Meanwhile, she was shaking. I looked at her and asked, “What happened?” I loved it. There is. ‘She said, ‘Because you’re an idiot.’ In her car on the way home, she said to me, “You have to change the way you think.” Then she put the idea in my head (that stalking is just that) and I completely agreed. ”

“Shabanaji never questioned Rocky Owl Rani’s gender politics”

Sharing an anecdote, Karan says: “When Shabanaji’s character meets Dharamji and there was an Abhi Na Jao Chho Ka moment (in ‘Rocky Aur Rani’), I was fanning her. And Shabanaji said to me, ‘That doesn’t make any sense.’ I told her, “You’re working with me, so of course there’s no point.”

Karan said that after his ‘Rocky Our Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ co-star Shabana Azmi watched ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, she was upset about the distorted gender politics in the film. He said that he severely criticized him for his actions. Karan says Azmi brought him a note during the shooting of Rocky Owl Rani, “but it wasn’t about gender politics.” He says: “She never doubted the political nature of the film. The non-negotiable for me is that Shabanaji, you have to do your hair and makeup even when you’re distraught (I told her). She said, ‘ I was like, “Kya, mat love, hi.” Main Fish Bana Rahi Hun Kitchen Main Aur Mele Baal Kule Hain? Itni khoobsurat sari pehni hai aur itni jewelry kyn pehni hai kitchen mein?’ I was like, ‘Kyunki ye meri picture hai!’.

He shared that he had reached the end. he said: “My father was definitely not like that. Shah Rukh Khan agar malega toh phra desh dekega ki woh mal raha hai. Aur phir woh loyenju. Tadaptadapke , poo poo, ka loyenge.”

“I’m often a victim of preconceptions.”Talking about how movie buffs and critics don’t see his films the way they are, Karan said: You’ve seen me play many roles that you may or may not like. But you come to me with a truckload of opinions because you believe that’s the kind of person I am. you don’t know me Would you like to rate my movie as it is? I was often a victim of preconceptions. ”
