Exclusive: Guneet Monga reveals why India didn’t win Oscar in feature film category

Just when the important night is about to arrive, bollywood hungama I spoke to producer Guneet Monga Kapoor. She made India proud after her film at last year’s Academy Awards elephant whisperers It won the trophy for Best Short Documentary. This was her second Oscar win. period.end of sentence He also won the same award in 2018 and served as executive producer.

Asked if he is now used to being called an “Oscar-winning producer,” Monga replied, “Yes, it feels surreal and beautiful and magical and like the year of magic and miracles I’ve had.” I feel like after the Oscars, I’ll do a movie like killRepresenting that in Toronto, it feels good overall. ”

More than a few Indians have won Oscars over the decades. However, India has never won in the feature film category. Explaining what needs to be done to achieve this, Mr Monga said: “First of all, it is very important to choose films that can be distributed in America. Many Indian films that are submitted every year to these film festivals like Venice, Toronto, Berlin, Busan, etc. should get the coverage they deserve. When a film wins at a film festival, it creates a worldwide buzz. The next step is for these films to be distributed to mainstream American distributors, who are responsible for selling and marketing the film. That means the organization that invested the most in the film wins the Oscar.”

She added, “Otherwise it’s very difficult to create a campaign on your own. It’s like doing a lot of press in L.A., and if you’ve never been to a festival before, it’s very difficult to create a campaign on your own. We only have five weeks. So without an American agent, it’s very difficult. That might be why we didn’t win in the feature film category. We won in the short film category. We did that because there is no such selection process.”

Guneet Monga too believes this should be the protocol for winning the Best Feature Film award. “If we just want to do some screenings over there, we’re doing that anyway. For example, Lagaan Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics, it went much further. Similarly, elephant whisperers, there was Netflix. Netflix did a lot of work with us and we did a campaign with them. We were able to make this much progress because we had an American distributor. ”

Monga agreed that producers have a completely different challenge after their film is selected for an Oscar. “It’s stressful and challenging and you have to explore new worlds and territory,” she said.
