Director Anurag Kashyap says Bollywood is far behind Malayalam films, praises ‘Manjummel Boyz’

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has praised the Malayalam film Manjumel Boys, calling it an exceptional piece of confident mainstream filmmaking. The director of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘Dobara’ also said that the Malayalam film industry is far ahead of Bollywood as it has released three great films in quick succession.

He also focused on movies that were made with big budgets but didn’t pay off. “It’s just an extraordinary piece of confident mainstream filmmaking. Much better than any big-budget film made in India. Such confidence, such impossible… Storytelling. I wondered how they would sell this idea to the producers. In Hindi, they can only do remakes of such ideas. Hindi films have really been left behind because of the three great Malayalam films. ” wrote Anurag on film diary app Letterboxd.

This movie review celebrates Malayalam cinema, which is known for producing realistic and quality content. Last year, the industry faced a slump with few hits, but 2024 is set to be a better year for Mollywood. Netizens shared Anurag’s review of ‘X’. Many non-Malayalis also wanted to know about the other two Malayalam films he mentioned in his review.

Nasreen and Mamitha Baiju starrer ‘Premal’ has come close to ‘Manjumer Boys’ with impressive box office collection, followed by ‘Brahmayugam’ starring Mammootty, directed by Rahul Sadasivan.
